Saturday Night Live season 43: Who is primed for more screen time?

Saturday Night Live season 43

Is now the best time to start looking towards Saturday Night Live season 43? It feels that way, now that we are a few days removed from season 42 and some of the news about departures is starting to settle in. It’s certainly possible more news could trickle in, but for now, it feels right to start to look ahead as though the people still attached to the show are the ones who will return.

Of this group, there are clearly some stars — Kate McKinnon is clearly the marquee star of the show at this point, with Leslie Jones / Cecile Strong behind her and with Beck Bennett stepping it up in a big way this past season. Even newcomer Mikey Day really burst onto the season as a featured player this past season.

So who among the remaining members of the cast deserves some more time in the spotlight? Based on the past season, there are a few names worth highlighting here.

Alex Moffat – While funny in the majority of his scenes, the first-year featured player still doesn’t have enough recognizable characters. Through much of the season, he almost felt indistinguishable from Mikey Day with his appearances. He needs a big Weekend Update character or another way to make his personal stamp on the show.

Melissa Villasenor – The best impressionist on the show, and someone who did manage to improve as the season went on. Unfortunately, she still wasn’t getting much screen time even at the end. What she needs to do now is find a way to get great characters that she can play to go along with these impressions. If she does that in season 43, she’s golden.

Pete Davidson – As Pete attended to bettering himself as a person throughout much of the middle of this season, this was a pretty quiet year for him. Season 43 could be an opportunity for him to really become the breakout star so many people proclaimed him to be when he first joined the show. He needs more notable sketches beyond his Weekend Update pieces; he’s a great writer, so it feels like the right time to see more of him as a sketch performer.

Who do you think is primed to have a great season of Saturday Night Live coming up in season 43? Feel free to share in the comments!
