Katy Perry’s American Idol salary is reportedly all sorts of shocking
According to a report from TMZ, Perry may have been paid a shocking $25 million to be the ringleader of the judging panel, a stark increase of as much as $10 million from when Jennifer Lopez was the “head judge” in so many ways of the panel. This is all the more shocking because of all the reports floating around out there suggesting that saving money was one of the big priorities for ABC as they went into this negotiation. If that was what they really wanted, didn’t they screw something up in the process here? Sure seems like it. In order to make this show a little bit more cost-effective, they’re going to have to find two other judges for a steep fraction of that price.
Already, ABC is going to have a hard time making the new American Idol into an enormous hit for the network. Enthusiasm wasn’t all that high for the show when it first was announced, just because it’s only been a year since the most-recent season aired. Also, it’s not like this is the only venue to discover talent anymore. If you’re talented and charismatic enough, you can get a YouTube account and find a way to become a star that way. Just look at some of the big artists today who are famous because of that. In comparison, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, Jennifer Hudson, and Carrie Underwood are probably four of the alumni from American Idol with staying power, but that is out of a field of 15 seasons. That’s a LOT of seasons.
New episodes of American Idol will start up at some point in 2018. Who knows? Maybe ABC has some slick deal to further monetize the show in a way that is not entirely clear just yet. You better hope so given how much money they are pouring into the property.
