Elementary season 5 finale spoilers: Mystery woman theories; promo problems

With the Elementary season 5 finale airing on Sunday night, there is hope for a sense of finality when it comes to some of the show’s long-simmering arcs. For example, will this episode give you closure when it comes to the gang battle, and a sense of peace following Shinwell’s death? Given that he proved himself over time to be one of the most tragic figures on the show, it does feel right that the character in the end does deserve some sort of opportunity to find peace after the fact.

Then, there is one other interesting element in the mystery woman who has already turned up, someone connected in some way to Holmes’ past. Who could it be? One of the best theories out there is a projection of Sherlock’s mother, just because we’ve already met his father Morland and this would be such an interesting, unique way to bring forward that sort of mythology. Meanwhile, another interesting one is the possibility of if being his sister, though that would be especially strange timing given that Sherlock season 4 just did something very similar with the whole Eurus Holmes storyline and all of the various complications there.

Now, if there is one thing to complain about when it comes to Elementary, it is the dubious strategy in which CBS is using to promote the show. It’s something that we’ve complained about previously with Criminal Minds, Hawaii Five-0, and many other shows, almost as though the network needs to casually remind its viewers who Holmes and Watson are — and that they are “not romantic” despite living under the same roof. Don’t we all get the point at this point?

Now, it does seem a little bit petty to complain about this given that the show was the recipient of a season 6 renewal (a surprise to some), but given that this is the finale, couldn’t there be something a little more epic released to get people excited? This is, after all, the last new episode of the show airing on CBS between now and presumably early 2018. Even though there were more episodes ordered, there were only presumably enough of them for a shortened run long after the fall season officially gets underway.
