Absentia teaser video: Another memory for Stana Katic’s Emily

teaser video

Given that there was a little break in terms of the Absentia updates during the week, why not try to make up for it now with two in two days? This latest one is another bit of analysis, this time brought on by a new teaser video shared by the show’s official account featuring Stana Katic’s Emily Byrne at the center of it.

What is the goal of this? It’s reminiscent of another recent teaser video showing her presumably with her child — it’s another memory, another highlight of the past. It’s another chance to explore further what was, and start to understand even more of what could be once Emily’s consciousness is reconstructed.

At the time of this video, Emily and her husband (Patrick Heusinger) were clearly happy, and they were beginning an early stage of their family together. There is no child yet presumably, but there is a dog — and who doesn’t love dogs? There is snow virtually all around the two of them, which mostly just suggests that they are going to have a heck of a job trying to clean that snow off of the dog later. (Yes, we’re being intentionally silly at this point.)

Ultimately, the big significance of this video, with its foreboding music and all, is the sense of detachment that Emily may be feeling from herself in this series. She knows that these are her memories, but they are distant, and there is very little in between to contextualize them. It’s as though she is living two separate lives. While memory loss is a fairly commonly-occurring trope on many TV series, what Absentia may be doing in order to differentiate itself further from the pack is really diving into the psychology of what this phenomenon is really like as opposed to some device that exists for an episode or two.

There is joy that comes out of seeing these two characters happy together, but then, your mind snaps back and you realize that this is all temporary. It’s an illusion from the past. The reality is where the two parties are now, facing a near-impossible situation where he has moved on, and Emily is back from the dead. It’s something that no one could have ever expected or imagined.
