One of the most interesting things about The Flash moving into season 4 is that we may already know the next Big Bad: DeVoe. It was such a throwaway comment made by Abra Kadabra in the midst of a conversation with Barry earlier this season, but so much other stuff he’s said has turned out to be true. As a result of that, why wouldn’t you think anything otherwise about this? All signs point towards DeVoe rising, but in what form remains to be seen.
Is it possible that the character could be someone we’ve already met? That is certainly one of the more interesting theories popping around the internet, especially in relation to the Speed Force Bazooka inventor Tracy Brand. A threat on Reddit at the end of this past month was the first place we’ve detected the theory, but it’s since also shown up over on Movie Pilot, as well. One of the main cruxes for this theory is that she is someone even more skilled in tech than Cisco, at least in terms of who she ends up becoming. Therefore, it’s easy to foresee a situation where she ends up becoming a major force to be reckoned with within the Flash universe provided that something happens to her to make her become evil.
One other reason the theory is intriguing is simply a matter of demographics. This show’s never had a female Big Bad before, and neither has Arrow. It would be interesting for the show to have a new villain who is effervescent and somewhat lighter than the super-dark people as of late; she can still turn evil without losing a sense of humor or awkwardness.
While the idea is exciting and Anne Dudek is a capable actor, there are three major problems with the theory.
1. It’s a big departure from the comics – Granted, you can say the same thing about the show’s interpretation about Savitar. This was FAR different than the comics. It’s still a jump for the show to make.
2. Explaining the timeline – Before Barry and company got to Tracy, she apparently came up with the technology to defeat Savitar five years into the future. If she was evil, why would she want to destroy him and help Team Flash in the process?
3. The H.R. factor – The two have feelings for each other. Provided that H.R. is still around (there’s another theory about that), she has a good reason to want to keep playing for the good guys.
What do you think about this theory? Could DeVoe actually be Tracy Brand? Sound off now in the comments below!
