The CW Fall 2017 Schedule was released earlier today, and there were a couple of very clear takeaways from it in terms of programming. First, this is a network that seems ready to go all-in when it comes to the prospect of its hit comedies airing on Friday nights. Also, they’re not necessarily beholden to airing Arrow Wednesday nights at 8:00 p.m. Eastern for the remainder of its run.
There are some curious moves made for this schedule, and in addition to the full schedule below, there is also a little bit of analysis.
8:00 – Supergirl
9:00 – Valor (new drama)
Given that both shows feature strong, capable women, this lineup makes some sense. The bigger problem is that Valor just doesn’t seem like a show destined to work on The CW, which doesn’t really delve into matters of the military and military is a hot theme of pilot season this year.
8:00 – The Flash
9:00 – DC’s Legends of Tomorrow
This is the same schedule as earlier this year.
8:00 – Riverdale (new timeslot)
9:00 – Dynasty (new drama)
Technically, Dynasty is only new in the sense that this is a remake of a classic show. It’s an interesting move for the network to devote a night to just soapy character-based dramas. In the process, they will probably shed some viewers.
8:00 – Supernatural
9:00 – Arrow (new timeslot)
This move seems designed mostly to give Arrow a night and time that doesn’t conflict with many other big shows. It’ll be just fine no matter when it airs, so there isn’t that much of a reason to worry about it.
8:00 – Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
9:00 – Jane the Virgin (new time)
It’s a crappy timeslot for Jane the Virgin to take, but the show’s still on the air. It may actually be decent counter-programming given that other networks are seemingly pushing serious drama on Fridays. This is a light, funny alternative.
