This Is Us season 2 will get Super Bowl episode, possible Christmas special
The network confirmed over the weekend that the critically-acclaimed drama will get a timeslot following the upcoming big game — wouldn’t it be pretty funny if it featured the Pittsburgh Steelers, given the obvious ties between the NFL team and the show’s main characters? There will probably be many references to the game regardless, or possibly, a Super Bowl storyline since there are so many family memories that come along with such events.
As far as how the episode structure is going to work this fall on Thursday, the presence of NFL football on Thursday nights will complicate matters somewhat. The first six episodes are going to air this fall prior to Thursday Night Football heading to NBC. After that, the network will then put the show on a lengthy hiatus. There will be some more episodes in the winter, but there is also coverage of the Winter Olympics to think about, as well.
One thing that sounds like a distinct possibility for the show is a separate Christmas special, which will give the show a chance to do something that stands on its own and gives people some moving content. This is something that network programming head Robert Greenblatt talked about recently on a call with reporters (per Deadline):
“We are thinking about doing a special Christmas episode … It’s a priority for us how can we keep This Is Us alive on schedule as long as possible even with the interruptions.”
Will the audience for This Is Us grow from the first season to the second? It certainly seems possible given that there are so many people talking about this show, and they could in turn spread the good news to some other people that they know. You don’t often see word of mouth spread like this when it comes to network shows; it’s a testament to the overall quality of the series that it does here.
