The Amazing Race 30, Elementary season 6 renewals official

Race 30

Cross two more CBS shows off the list of potentially getting either renewed or canceled. The Amazing Race 30 is a sure thing, and the same goes for Elementary season 6!

If you think in terms of pure live+same day ratings, maybe these pickups are considered a bit more of a surprise. Nonetheless, there are things to consider with each one of them.

The Amazing Race – This is one of the network’s most long-running shows, and it probably surprised executives somewhat in deserving another season after it was virtually left for dead entering the 2016-17 campaign. Originally, it was scheduled for late April following the end of MacGyver, but was moved up following the Training Day cancellation. It’s performed better there than other recent CBS shows have, and it costs a heck of a lot less to make.

There’s no word yet on if season 30 will be the final one for the franchise, but it wouldn’t be shocking given that this is such a nice, even number and going out after season 30 is going out with your head held high. Still, it’d be great if there was a season 35 or 40 in a perfect world! (This is still one of the most entertaining reality franchises on the air, bar none.)

Elementary – Meanwhile, the Jonny Lee Miller / Lucy Liu series is an even bigger renewal surprise ratings-wise, given that this is a show that ranks at the bottom of the network’s programming in terms of the demo. However, what it does bring to the table is a huge international base, syndication, and also full ownership from the network. In the end, it makes CBS money, and this is a very different world where networks are monetizing their programs in a different way than they used to. Throughout the past few days, we’ve seen from shows like The Exorcist and also Timeless that shows with lower ratings in live+same day metrics can get the renewals because of other factors.

Now, the jury is still out on a handful of other shows, including Code Black and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, to see where they lie.
