Supergirl season 2 spoilers: Are Superman, Cat Grant sources of hope?

Superman

The final two hours of Supergirl season 2 begin on Monday, and they will forge an epic story featuring the title hero squaring off against one of her most notorious adversaries to date: Rhea. It’s one thing that she is an incredibly powerful foe from another planet; she also just so happens to be Mon-El’s mother, and with that comes questions of ethics and finding the right way to defeat someone who Mon-El on one level cares about. There are also other issues, including President Marsdin’s own controversial philosophy for handling the aliens on planet Earth.

In order to determine the right path forward, Kara will need help. Said help will come courtesy of Kat Grant and Superman, who each will return before the finale as a source of guidance, and potentially hope during what is a difficult time in life. In setting up the arrivals, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg kept the message (per Entertainment Weekly) relatively clear:

“…This is Kara’s darkest hour. It’s perfect that she has both Superman and Cat, who are these great stabilizing influences in her life — Cat, who tends to have a good handle on what Kara needs, and Clark has a pretty good handle on what Supergirl needs. She needs them both desperately because she’s faced with some truly awful decisions to make in the finale and choices that affect her both as Kara and as Supergirl. Having her surrogate mother and surrogate brother there to make these decisions, it’s good to have them there.”

Their arrivals don’t mean that a clear path will open up like the Red Sea in the final episodes; it just means that there will be some semblance of support. This is the most complicated time for the show since there are so many different things being juggled in the air, and there remains no clear idea as to where any or all of it will land. For example, will all of the regulars survive season 2? This is a fairly positive, lighthearted show, but it is also one interested in creating an illusion of real life. As a result of that, real people do die in these sort of hyper-dangerous situations. The show preparing for that serves them better than it would otherwise.
