Emerald City canceled by NBC; season 2 hopes dead

Emerald City

We’re at the time now where networks are starting to determine the fate of some select shows — for Emerald City, that fate is cancellation.

Sources have confirmed that NBC is opting to move forward without a season 2 for the Wizard of Oz inspired series, but this is not a cancellation that requires them to have too much in the way of negative press on their hands. In many circles, Emerald City was billed for the most part as a limited series, and as a result of that, they can maintain that this was always the intention to have it air and then move forward.

With that said, we feel 100% confident that had the ratings been significantly better, they would have ordered a season 2 and moved forward with some other sort of story plan. There was some potential there based on where things were in the story at the end of the finale.

It’s hard to autopsy what went wrong with Emerald City to cause it to end, other than just that it couldn’t get the buzz going. While it had a terrible timeslot on Friday nights, Grimm managed to get things going there well enough to last years. The problem in 2017 is just that you have do something to REALLY stand out, and even then, you may be hanging by a thread. You’re reliant on DVR ratings, international deals, streaming, syndication, ownership, and a whole lot more. It’s a combination of some of these things that could keep some shows like Elementary and Quantico a little more on the bubble than they probably would be otherwise.

We do hope that in the aftermath of this cancellation, NBC doesn’t consider this a complete failure on their part and they continue to air interesting scripted content on Friday nights. While there are going to be some shows that don’t work in the ratings, there are also going to be some that end up becoming hits here and there. NBC found success with This Is Us, even if it did run into some failures elsewhere.
