Ratings: The Originals season 4 stays low; Blue Bloods’ lowest rating to date

Blue Bloods season 7

We wish that we had some more news to discuss here other than Blue Bloods’ lowest rating ever, but that’s the jumping-off point today.

Friday night’s new episode of the show generated just a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is a shockingly low number on a night overall that was rather depressing in terms of numbers. Not a single show made it above a 0.9 — granted, there was no Shark Tank, but that didn’t make anything less depressing. We’re mostly just trying to figure out why all of these shows fell so hard.

Also, this is one of the first times we’ve really started to question in some way why the ratings for a show like Blue Bloods would fall this hard, and if they don’t recover, what this could mean for the future. There’s no need to push the panic button just yet, but we do think that there is a chance the show could eventually wind things down if the numbers continue to sink at this rate.

For now, we’re just going to consider this to be an outlier and hope that things rise and recover for the upcoming finale.

As for The Originals season 4…

If you’re looking for an update here on this show’s own renewal chances, we wish the news was better. Last night’s episode failed to recover from the 0.3 rating that it posted in the finals, even though it did rise in total viewers. Our concern at this point is that the show is lagging around 10% behind season 3 in the demo so far, and a good start is feeling a little bit more squandered now. Can the show figure out a way to get it back? We certainly hope so, but we do know that with such things there really are no guarantees. We’ll just have to wait and see precisely what happens as we get closer and closer to the finale.

Personally, we’ve been pretty consistent with our feeling here that we would like to see at least one more season to see what this series looks like in a world without The Vampire Diaries, and if a character or two from that show could migrate over to New Orleans.
