Ratings: Blindspot season 2, Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders steady

Blindspot

For the sake of this particular ratings article, we’re looking at Blindspot and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders as they fight for renewal. These are both shows that have some things going for them, but still some work left to do.

The biggest thing to remember here is that at this point in the spring, where we often tend to see many shows fall by great leaps and bounds, sometimes staying steady is enough to be construed a victory.

Blindspot – Let’s start with Jaimie Alexander series, which posted a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic for its first new episode in weeks. That may not look great on paper, but it held steady in the demo and gained slightly in total viewers from this past episode. It also was strong enough to beat both Fox and The CW in finishing #3 on the night.

As of right now, Blindspot is in an interesting spot as a bubble show alongside some other programs like The Blacklist, Taken, Chicago Justice, and Timeless. We do think that three of the five, at least, will be renewed. Much of it may come down to everything from ratings to budget to studio to which shows NBC feel have the most potential moving forward. We’re cautiously optimistic about Blindspot right now, though it could return in a different timeslot. Airing this show at the family hour was always an odd choice.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders – Meanwhile, the Criminal Minds spin-off held firm to another 0.8 rating in the demo. It kept two-thirds of its lead-in, but it did finish a distant third behind a returning Chicago PD and then also Designated Survivor over on ABC. We’re not as optimistic about its renewal odds, but we do think CBS could feasibly do precisely what they did this year — order 10-13 episodes again, and keep the show in the back pocket in case some other shows tank out. The worst-case scenario is that you don’t need the show during the season, and then maybe you air the new episodes in the summer. We actually think this show would do all right in those months for viewers out there who are looking for a good procedural.
