Descendants 2 premiere date revealed; movie will air on ABC, Lifetime
The premiere date for the sequel is officially set to be Friday, July 21 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, and you’re going to be able to watch it on not only the Disney Channel, but also ABC, Disney XD, Lifetime (for some reason), and Freeform. This is Disney going hard on what has become already one of their most lucrative franchises, and that’s saying a whole lot given that we’ve only seen one of the movies actually air at the moment.
Nonetheless, it’s clear why they love it so much — you get a chance to tell a modernized version of a classic Disney story with the children of many notorious villains. You tell the whole nature-vs-nurture debate in a new, fascinating way, and they can market the heck out of it. There are going to be Descendants products all across the board, and we already imagine that there are going to be opportunities to extend the franchise in other ways. Maybe they’ll find a way to create some sort of proper spin-off series that they can air more than every year or two.
The video below features many of the cast members making the big announcement alongside director Kenny Ortega. Go ahead and start tabulating the big ratings that we’re going to see this get.
When you consider the July air date, it doesn’t take too much time at all in order to consider why all of these various networks would want to take the project on. Just remember for a minute here that this is the summer ratings doldrums, and this gives many of these networks a chance to put something on that is not only culturally relevant, but has a decent chance at actually setting some ratings records.
