MasterChef Junior interview: Peyton Copeland on proudest moment, much more

Peyton Copeland

On this past episode of MasterChef Junior, Peyton Copeland found herself as one of the two home cooks sent home following an intense tag-team sushi challenge with Afnan that was unlike any that we’ve seen on the season so far.

So what does Peyton think about that challenge looking back at it, and what moment this season made her the proudest to be a part of the show? In a recent interview conducted via email, we looked at both of those subjects and more.

CarterMatt – How proud are you of yourself making it all the way to the top eight?

Peyton Copeland – I am so proud of myself. When I first started my MasterChef journey, I didn’t think I would get that far. I was just happy to be invited to the semi-finals in Los Angeles. Then I was happy to just make it into the Top 20.

Through the 11 episodes this season, what was the moment you were the proudest of?

Probably when Julie Bowen kept complimenting my steak and chimichurri sauce during the Mom challenge. It was pretty cool that she hadn’t had steak in so long, but my meal made her like it again. I was especially proud that I did well because it was a challenge in honor of my Mom.

What was the most difficult part of doing the sushi challenge for you?

Having to tag team. It made it difficult to finish any one part of the sushi. Plus, working with someone who was older than me and probably felt that they needed to take the lead. I’m a natural leader. In a team challenge like that it’s difficult to have two people trying to take the lead. We should have communicated a lot better.

What did you learn about yourself through being on this season?

I learned that if I put my mind to something and I work really hard at it, I can accomplish anything.

How often are you cooking now, and how much as the show influenced some of your personal food dreams?

I cook almost every day. Sometimes, it just something small, but other times I cook full meals for my family. The show made me realize that my dream of becoming an executive chef and restaurant owner is that much closer with the experience I gained. Since being on the show, I have had a chance to tour and help out in some restaurant kitchens which has given me even more experience.
