Is Saturday Night Live new tonight? Tom Hanks, David S. Pumpkins once more

Live new tonight

Is Saturday Night Live new tonight? We wish that we had an answer to that question that would satisfy many of you out there, but alas, that is not the case. The NBC show is going to continue to be on hiatus from now until May 6, which is when the first of the three final shows of the season are going to be coming on the air.

Just in case you were overly curious about what will be in some of these shows, there’s one thing that we can tell you: Melissa McCarthy. Do you need to know anything else? Granted, the May 6 installment will be hosted by Chris Pine, but it absolutely feels as though there is going to be some great stuff down the road on the other side of that with Melissa and then Dwayne Johnson down the road for the finale on May 20.

Tonight, you are going to be getting a repeat airing of the installment from earlier this season featuring Tom Hanks as the host, and we will admit that we are somewhat surprised that NBC is opting to air an episode that was actually before the Presidential Election. That feels like such a different time now upon looking back at it — it’s rather strange when you think about it that way.

Yet, we do think there is a specific reason why NBC wants to re-air this episode — it’s Hanks! They know that he is a huge ratings draw, and they can get probably better numbers repeating his show than other episodes this year. Plus, it has the David S. Pumpkins sketch, arguably the #1 original sketch of the year. It wasn’t funny because of an impression or because of some current event. It’s timeless, it’s stupid, but it’s somehow so addicting that we’ve watched it more times than we can count.

The best thing about it is that despite the strangeness, there is some sense to what Mr. Pumpkins is planning. He plays the long game with his innocent victims here, luring them into a false sense of security with his goofy moves before going in for an ultimate scare.

In some ways, we want a cameo from David every Halloween. However, there’s almost no chance that it will ever match the greatness that we have here.

Watch the video below to be reminded of its greatness. Meanwhile, you can head over to the link here in the event you want some other news related to SNL right now. (Photo: NBC.)
