Outlander season 3 teaser: First impressions of Jamie and Claire’s search

Tonight, Starz debuted the official Outlander season 3 teaser, and we absolutely have to think that there is going to be excitement around it.

Now that we’ve seen it, we do have one quick reaction: Think along the lines of our eyes popping out of our head. This teaser was emotional, picturesque, and very brief. We expected around thirty seconds, and it was a few seconds more than that.

Basically, the teaser serves to set up what the story of the third season is going to be, with Claire (Caitriona Balfe) heading back in time in order to find the love her life Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) following the revelation that he was alive in “Dragonfly in Amber.” There are brief glimpses of her life with Frank Randall (Tobias Menzies), just as you get a brief sense of Bree’s graduation and Claire’s professional advancement since arriving in America. Meanwhile, you also see Jamie in the aftermath of Culloden. Over time, though, the two are off left in the wind from each other, and the start of season 3 will revolve around the two starting to find their way back to one another. (Jamie has a powerful utterance of Claire’s name at the end.)

The bad news is that we’re not going to have this teaser for you presumably until the morning — Starz isn’t putting it up officially until then according to Lynette Rice, and we want to respect the network that has shown some respect to us. It’s probably both flattering and frustrating that Starz values Outlander so much that they wanted to use a teaser to draw eyeballs to their new series The White Princess.

The good news is that based on this teaser alone, you’re going to be in for an excellent season that gives you the pain of heartbreak, and then eventually the joy of reunion. Unfortunately, there’s nothing in here of Jamie and Claire together, but we didn’t expect them to give you the print shop scene or anything else so early into the run. There’ll be a little bit more time for that down the road. (We anticipate a full trailer later this summer.) The same goes for the footage being filmed in South Africa.
