The Originals season 4 ratings continue to stay solid on weak night

Originals season 4 ratings

For the most part, there wasn’t good news when looking at the numbers for Friday — unless you are looking at The Originals season 4 ratings.

What we’re seeing right now is that the series, starring Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, and Phoebe Tonkin, continues to be one of the most consistent performers out there for The CW on Fridays. Last night, the show matched its season high with a 0.4 rating, which also means that it slightly outpacing The Vampire Diaries through the first four episodes of the final season. The two shows averaged the same exact rating over the past year, and that’s with the latter show getting a bump for some of its final episodes.

Perhaps even more important is this — so far through season 4, The Originals is almost even in the demo from season 3, and it is actually up close to 10% in total viewers. In an era where most network scripted series are falling a good 10-15% year to year, this sort of retention is outstanding and it really should be celebrated. The CW should also look at this as a signal that viewers want more of this show, and it should at least get another 13 episodes next season. Remember that they may have some scheduling holes given that No Tomorrow and Frequency are unlikely to return, and both The Vampire Diaries and Reign are saying farewell this season. Sure, the Monday-Thursday schedule is a little packed, but there are some holes on Friday.

Let’s also hope that over the next few weeks that The Originals gets that season 5 renewal, mostly because nobody wants to go into the final episodes of the season starting to get nervous about whether or not we are going to see the show back on the air. Renewing it now just makes things a little bit easier, and alleviates many of the fears that we have. Also, it gives the show plenty of time to plan, which is important since this will be the first season that would be written completely after the end of The Vampire Diaries being filmed.

Ultimately, this was a pretty poor night elsewhere — the best rating we saw on the night was a 1.0 in the demo.
