The Crown season 3: Claire Foy talks departure after season 2

The Crown season 3

While this news may have been well-reported for a long time now, we have further context of the mass exodus of cast members for The Crown season 2. Claire Foy will be joining many of her cast members in heading out the door, which is going to be a rather emotional affair for fans that have become invested in these actors.

The actress, whose stellar performance of Queen Elizabeth II is one of the touchstones of the series, spoke to People Magazine about departing The Crown, and how in so many ways it’s a blessing to be able to go on and do something a little different for a while:

“That’s not a shock – we always knew when we signed up to it. And also not to be funny but it’s also a real plus.

“As an actor, there’s nothing worse than the sound of ‘seven years.’ I’m sure to some people it sounds amazing but to us it’s like, seven years of playing the same person? And this is a tough job, you know?

“It’s long, a good nine-[monther]. And that’s a lot of your life that you sign over to it. I’m going to miss it terribly. But I just can’t wait to see where it goes, I just can’t wait.”

The reason for her departure is that the entire structure for The Crown as a series is that each season of the show is going to be structured based on a different part of the Queen’s life. While the first two seasons are revolving around her earlier years, we are eventually going to see the show evolve; with that, the story will shift more towards chronicling some of other periods of her life. With that in mind, they are going to need a different person in the role.

New episodes of The Crown will premiere most likely later this year on Netflix. The series is coming off of a banner awards year, which included it cleaning up at the Golden Globes. Its next awards-show challenge is going to be at the Emmys later this summer, where it will have competition from more recent series and other critically-acclaimed productions.
