Ratings: Agents of SHIELD boosts season 5 hopes; New Girl finale even

What are the odds of an Agents of SHIELD season 5? We’re nervous about the show’s future, but at least the ratings that came out last night give you a reason for some cautious optimism.

Overall, the show posted a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic for its first episode of its final arc this season. While that is hardly a performance worthy of mass celebration, it’s up a tenth in the demo from where it was at this point when it was last on the air.

If this was CBS or NBC with their current ratings being what they are, we’d argue that SHIELD unfortunately had little to no chance to be on the air for another season. Thankfully, this is ABC we’re talking about here — a network where the ratings are not exactly through the roof these days. We said this yesterday, and we hold firm to it — we do think that at least two of Quantico, Agents of SHEILD, and Once Upon a Time will be brought back for another season. Maybe all three will. The main issue for the network is that they’ve got so many other slam-dunk cancellations that they have to fill up some of their schedule.

If SHIELD does come back, we do anticipate that it will be a shorter episode order given that they have Marvel’s The Inhumans coming for the fall and likely won’t pair up two different Marvel shows at the same time.

As for some other ratings on the night…

-The Prison Break revival returned to a 1.5 rating in the demo, which is decent but a little bit lower than we expected for a show that was airing for the first time in years. We’ll see how much of that audience sticks around for the remaining episodes of the series now.

-The finale for New Girl, meanwhile, held firm at around a 0.9. That doesn’t give us any reason to be discouraged about its chances of coming back for another season, though it doesn’t make us altogether thrilled either.

-Of course The Voice won the night, but with only a 1.9 rating it’s interesting to see that the show is below a 2.0 already at this point in the season.
