Ratings: A spotlight on Priyanka Chopra’s Quantico, season 3 odds
Will there be a Quantico season 3? Fans of both Priyanka Chopra and the series itself obviously want to know, but unfortunately, we don’t have a great answer to the question at present.
The only thing we can say at present is that the show remains on the bubble over on ABC, and we could have a chance to learn its future one way or another by the time May rolls around. There’s a reason to be feeling a little bit mixed in terms of the odds of the show returning, and it starts with the ratings of the series itself versus the ratings of the network as a whole.
When you look at the numbers from last night alone, they weren’t great — Quantico drew a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which was down substantially from its Dancing with the Stars lead-in (1.6). This is slightly lower than its season average of a 0.7, which is down a hefty 40% from the season average during season 1. We actually think that in terms of format, this is the best Quantico we’ve seen since the beginning of the series — it’s a little more concise and compact, and you can follow the journey of one Alex Parrish in a way that you weren’t able to previously. Unfortunately, many of the people who were once viewers of the show aren’t around to see it now.
When you’re looking at Quantico through the lens of everything else that is on other networks, we’d say that it was in big trouble. A 0.7 rating typically won’t get you renewed. On the struggling ABC, however, it’s got a shot. Let’s look for a minute at their landscape — Conviction, Time After Time, and Notorious are all effectively canceled already, and it doesn’t appear as though American Crime is going to be back. You can have acclaimed programming, but someone does need to watch it. The future for Once Upon a Time and Agents of SHIELD is in jeopardy. The only shows we’re confident about returning are all things TGIT (everything other than The Catch from Shonda Rhimes is already renewed) and Designated Survivor.
Our sentiment for now is that out of Once Upon a Time, Agents of SHIELD, and Quantico, two of the three will be renewed — maybe all three, but two is a reasonable guess. These shows all have followings, and with Quantico in particular you have a ton of international play to consider given Chopra’s star power overseas. We figure that this has to come into play at a certain point.
