America’s Got Talent: Simon Cowell surprised by Nick Cannon’s exit

Nick Cannon's exit

Nick Cannon’s exit from America’s Got Talent remains a very hot topic of conversation even weeks after it happened, and we also know one other thing right now: Even Simon Cowell was shocked about the way it all went down.

In speaking further about losing the show’s host, which came following some comments he made during a comedy special and some apparent backlash from NBC, the show’s judge / executive producer said the following to Entertainment Tonight:

“I didn’t know that Nick wasn’t going to be on the show until about two or three weeks before we started filming, and no one told me about this stuff. Anyway, it happened. I spoke to him, I thought he was going to come back but he wasn’t — then he was, wasn’t — and then in the end, we decided to start filming without him. After one day, we get a phone call — Tyra Banks wants to meet. I thought I was being wound up to be honest with you.”

Cowell did give a full endorsement to Banks, who he thinks will do just fine in the role. For the record, Cannon also had nothing but positive things to say about the new host, and we do think she’s experienced enough with live television to do a great job in the role. She’s not a risk since she knows how to be at the front of a reality show, but we do think that there’ll be a different energy. After all, Banks is a little more in the Cat Deeley camp in that she’s not a comedian, but she’s someone who still knows how to have a great time. She also eventually became a host after honing a wide array of other skills.

New episodes of America’s Got Talent will premiere a little bit later this summer, and ultimately, the most important thing when it comes to this season is talent. You need to have great acts who are incredibly entertaining, and who bring something unique to the show that we haven’t seen before. So long as there’s that, the season will be great.
