The Flash season 3 boss on the mystery of Savitar’s identity

Mystery of Savitar's identity

The mystery of Savitar’s identity is one of the overarching ones on The Flash season 3 so far, and it’s absolutely shown itself to be one that has a wide array of different possibilities. We’ve seen a number of different / often-interesting theories about who could be the God of Speed, with some possibilities including H.R., a future version of Wally, a different incarnation of Julian Albert, or even the future version of Barry Allen himself.

Our favorite theory is that future-Barry is Savitar, and that the moves that he made in going back into time with Flashpoint were drastic enough that he ended up changing the future. When he disappears many years in the future (remember the headline?), he’s on his way to becoming something terrifying and different than anything else.

The show is obviously doing its part to keep the identity secret for the time being, but based on what executive producer Andrew Kreisberg had to say on the subject to Entertainment Weekly recently, this looks like one of those mysteries that will make sense when it is revealed:

“When we have a masked villain, we do our best to subvert audience’s expectations … Hopefully, if we’ve done our jobs right, you will be both shocked and also go, ‘That makes perfect sense.’ So hopefully we’ve laid the groundwork for it all to make sense not just in the moment, but hopefully you look back and you realize how important it was for Barry to face this particular villain in his journey as a hero and how this season ties into all the others.”

That in itself is interesting, given that tying Savitar into the story of the Reverse-Flash and Zoom in some way could help to give the three different evil speedsters a little more weight in their own right. The biggest thing that we can possibly hope for out of the third season is that we feel like the show has done something different, and is still coming up with unique ways to surprise us even after so much time. Even if it turns out that Barry is Savitar and our theory is correct, it doesn’t have to be a disappointment in any way … provided that the twist is ultimately executed in an interesting way.
