American Crime Story season 3: Penelope Cruz to play Donatella Versace
FX confirmed on Monday that Penelope Cruz is going to play Donatella Versace in what is currently being called Versace: American Crime Story. She is the sister of famed designer Gianni Versace, who is being played by actor Edgar Ramirez of The Girl on the Train. Meanwhile, Darren Criss of Glee fame was already cast in the role of Andrew Cunanan, the serial killer responsible for Gianni’s murder.
There were rumors for a time that Lady Gaga was going to play Donatella in the series, just because of a physical similarity and then also her own fondness for the brand; however, this was later denied by executive producer Ryan Murphy.
The second and third seasons of the show are being filmed in rather-close proximity to one another, and are both going to air (tentatively) at some point in 2018. We know that personally, we’re far more intrigued by the Versace story than we are Katrina: American Crime Story, which is meant to be season 2. We personally wish that this series dropped the moniker and went just by Katrina, since it still doesn’t fit the bill of what this series is supposed to be in spite of however Murphy or anyone else tries to spin it. If they were to re-name the show, we don’t think anyone would mind and there would still be a good many people who opted to watch it in the end since Ryan Murphy’s fan base is loyal.
More than anything, we’re just hoping that these shows manage to continue the legacy established by the first American Crime Story season, which is one of the best shows on television that we’ve seen in a rather long span of time. Murphy is also proving that he has a knack with shows inspired by true stories with Feud: Bette & Joan, but we’d argue that this show is still missing something intangible, such as a soul underneath or a truly relatable character. Maybe we’ll get more of that on these American Crime Story seasons.
