Tonight, there is no new Call the Midwife on the BBC, so it makes sense that we look ahead to season 7 filming!
With that being said, there is still an important question: When is it actually going to start up? If the timeline works the way in which it typically does, what we imagine will happen is that the folks over at the network will start by working on the upcoming Christmas Special, which should of course premiere in December. Beyond that, we will have a further opportunity to look ahead to season 7 proper, which should premiere in January.
In a new interview with the Belfast Telegraph discussing some of Shelagh’s birth scenes in the finale with Laura Main, it’s mentioned that Call the Midwife season 7 filming will begin come May. That timing makes sense, given that it gives the cast and crew time to work on the entirety of the story before getting around to the holidays. From there, the cast gets a considerable amount of time to work on other things.
With that, there are of course questions aplenty regarding just who will be coming back for more new episodes when the show returns. While we’re hopeful that there will be a chance to see more of every actor, that’s never a sure thing. For example, Emerald Fennell (Patsy) is also an author, and she took some time off this past season to work on some books. Meanwhile, we’ve also seen the high-profile exit of Jessica Raine and it’s very well possible that Miranda Hart ends up continuing to be absent from the show. There were at one point plans for her character of Chummy to return for season 6, but they were written off at the last minute. There is still a chance that she could return for season 7, but it is a little too early to know for sure one way or another there.
For any American readers, you still have Call the Midwife season 6 to enjoy! New episodes of the show are going to be airing on PBS starting next month, and we will be back to cover those stories in some capacity, as well. You can find all of our coverage to date over here.
