Grey’s Anatomy season 13 spoilers: Ellen Pompeo directs ‘Be Still, My Soul’

Ellen Pompeo directs

There are many people out there who likely heard already that Ellen Pompeo was directing an episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 13, and we’ve now got a few details regarding specifically what it will be … and also how emotional it could become for one of the show’s main characters in particular.

“Be Still, My Soul” is the title for Pompeo’s directorial debut, and it’s going to be airing come Thursday, March 30 on ABC. We’ve seen the story of Maggie’s mother play out a little bit on the show so far, but judging from some of these details below, it feels even more clear that we’re going to see her struggle and potentially die before the season is over:

“When Maggie’s mom’s health deteriorates, the doctors are at odds over how to treat her. Meanwhile, Richard comes to grips with Bailey’s betrayal over the Residency Program.”

One of the things that we do definitely hope for this episode is that by the time that it airs, Maggie starts to be clued in a little bit as to what is actually going on with her mother. This is something that her mother opted not to tell her in the most-recent episode of the show, with the biggest reason for that being that the two had an epic argument and Maggie accused her mother of meddling with her life. It was the sort of argument that can easily send two characters careening away from each other for a rather-long stretch of time without any further hope for the future.

As for the other story with Richard, he’s been dealing with the residency program and the aftermath of Minnick’s arrival for most of the season. It’s hard to tell precisely what this story will entail, other than that it could feature a few events as of late coming to a head. We do think that by the end of this season, it would benefit the show to have a more specific plan for the future and to allow the characters to build with that in mind. Hopefully, that does include Richard continuing to have a place in the hospital, even though he’s felt some of his responsibilities start to crumble a little bit over the course of this year.
