Is SNL new tonight? Casey Affleck, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Chance the Rapper

Is SNL new tonight? -

Alas, Saturday Night Live is not new tonight after a nice little run on NBC. Nonetheless, there is an interesting show airing tonight from December, which featured Casey Affleck as the host and then also Chance the Rapper as the musical guest. It wasn’t the best show of the season, but it also wasn’t the worst, either.

If you’re watching the show for the first time tonight, or even if you’ve seen it before, there is one comedic sketch that is absolutely worthy of your time in a re-watch: The Dunkin’ Donuts spoof. It’s so stupid, but at the same time so random and so enjoyable. It’s also pretty indicative of the majority of the Dunkin’ Donuts you’ll find in Boston, based on some of the people who are from there. While we don’t hail from the area, we can attest that it’s reasonably similar to a guy that you find at some Tim Hortons in Toronto. Also, Affleck having the beard for a movie role basically makes him the prime candidate to play a close-to-homeless dude yelling at people within a donut shop.

This sketch was indicative of one of Casey’s better abilities during the show, and that was being able to slip into character. He struggled with it a little bit more when he was in some of the live sketches, but in pre-tapes he really had a chance to shine.

Will he have a chance to host again? Maybe, but personally we think that his brother Ben does a slightly better job at being in this environment. Plus, given that one of Ben’s characters is the brother of Bill Hader’s Stefon, we like to think that him returning could conjure up a return of that character, as well.

We don’t often highlight the musical guest during some of these re-watch articles, but both performances tonight featuring Chance the Rapper are worth checking out again. He’s one of the best performers of the past year, and he is probably one of our favorite people working in entertainment right now. We respect him even more now that he’s donated so much money to Chicago public schools, which is something that he had not done at the time of this appearance.

Remember that Saturday Night Live will be back on April 8 with a show that is hosted by Louis CK. Meanwhile, NBC also recently confirmed that Jimmy Fallon, Dwayne Johnson, and many other people will be hosting in the month of May. Head over here to read more about that! (Photo: NBC.)
