Doctor Who season 11: Steven Moffat offers up advice for new showrunner

Doctor Who season 11 is coming to BBC One eventually, but the reality here still is that you’re going to be waiting a good while for it! This season will be the first in many years without Steven Moffat on board as the showrunner, but he’s looking already to offer up a little bit of advice for Chris Chibnall. The Broadchurch writer will soon have the undertaking of running the franchise starting with season 11, and one of his big jobs right away will be finding the right person to take on the part of The Doctor.

Speaking within a new interview with Worldscreen, Moffat (who is also going to get a break from Sherlock given that there is no word when that show will be returning) made it clear what he has told Chibnall about taking on the role — and some of it is personal advice much more so than it is professional:

“He has his own ideas about how to do Doctor Who. The advice I’ve given him is all prosaic and all quite, ‘Make sure this happens, make sure you get that and don’t let them do this’. I won’t tell you what those things were!

“But it’s really about, you’ve got to see your kids now and then. You’ve got to go home now and then. You’ve got to keep living. It is a monstrous workload, Doctor Who, monstrous.” 

Given that we are speaking here about a show that is often so conceptual and also unwieldy, it probably makes it all the more integral that you find a place for yourself, and do the extra work in order to ensure that you don’t get completely lost within the world of the source material and everything that is going on with other worlds and places in time.

We certainly feel for Chibnall given all the expectations that are out there in order to make Doctor Who season 11 tremendous. We know that season 10 is going to premiere formally on April 15, and the Christmas Special in December will formally end the Moffat era. Beyond that, we’ll wait and see precisely when Chibnall’s first go at the franchise airs.
