The Voice sneak peek: See Valerie Ponzio’s blind audition to ‘Ring of Fire’

Valerie Ponzio -

If you are curious in seeing a blind audition in advance of Monday night’s new episode of The Voice, we’re more than happy to have that for you today!

Specifically, the video below highlights the Valerie Ponzio’s performance of “Ring of Fire,” which is one described by Adam Levine of containing little pieces of all of the various coaches. The blind audition started with notes of Gwen Stefani before capturing some of the country charm of Blake Shelton, the soul of Alicia Keys, and then even a rock element of the Maroon 5 frontman.(She actually reminds us a little tonally of one of last season’s coaches in Miley Cyrus.) After hearing the cover from start to finish a couple of times, we see where it’s coming from! It’s one thing to do a country cover as a blind audition — we see that often — but it’s another thing altogether to come out and give a performance sounds both like you’re honoring Johnny Cash and doing something new at the same time.

Valerie Ponzio certainly does have plenty of options in terms of who she can choose from, given that all four coaches turned around for her, and she’s left to make a choice between them. We can actually make a case for all of them in one way or another, but despite whatever anyone else says, Blake is still the best pick in terms of connections. There’s probably more competition there, but the reward is so much higher thanks to the contacts and the support that he tends to provide for some of his past contestants. Look at what he’s done with people like RaeLynn and Cassadee Pope just in case you need a little more evidence of it.

Is this somewhat of a predictable end to the deliberation? Possibly, but these contestants have to think in terms of what’s best for their careers — maybe Valerie feels like there’s a better connection elsewhere, and she’ll go with that. She’s the one with the control and has to go with her gut!

Other Valerie Ponzio music

Just in case you want to hear more Johnny Cash covers beyond her The Voice performance, before you can also hear the cover of another song of the music icon in “Folsom Prison Blues.” Great stuff. It’s pretty easy to root for anyone who is such an admirer of Cash.
