Last Week Tonight with John Oliver takes on American Health Care Act

Last Week Tonight -

It was only two years ago that Last Week Tonight with John Oliver aired a segment on Obamacare while we were waiting to see precisely what President Donald Trump was going to do. Now, we’re starting to get a good sense of that courtesy of the American Health Care Act, the new measure that was introduced to help change the system and give everyone, to the words of Paul Ryan, a “better way.”

So what did Oliver think of the new bill? Well, let’s just say that you probably saw this coming: He’s not the biggest fan in the world of it. Oliver specifically had a huge problem with the way in which it doesn’t benefit many other than the wealthiest 1%, who could see some enormous tax breaks with it while it makes life harder on the poor. Oliver continually does a good job when it comes to presenting his information — does he come at things from a very pro-liberal point of view? Sure, but he does do a good job injecting actual facts into his pieces, while still condensing it within a fairly short period of time.

Of course, Oliver did figure out a way to bring Trump directly into the conversation, citing specifically his desire to not put his name on the act. He has been willing to put his name on everything from steaks to vodka, but somewhere in the process, he wasn’t all that interested in branding this Trumpcare.

We were waiting to see what the end of this segment was going to be given everything that he went through, and we learned that it was the return of the Cowboy! Oliver and the show once again bought ad time in the Washington DC area in order to air a commercial featuring their cowboy during Fox & Friends. Knowing that Trump is a regular viewer, this was a way to try and make a point to him.

Our overall view of the segment

Factually, this was one of the better ones that we’ve had a chance to see over the course of the season — especially when it comes to the ways in which the Republicans are working to get this passed using current Senate rules.

It wasn’t the funniest segment of the year — but that cowboy still gets us every time!

What do you think of Oliver’s segment this time, both in terms of content and then also entertainment? Be sure to share some of your thoughts with a comment! (Photo: HBO.)
