Call the Midwife season 6 episode 8: Should you prepare for Patsy return?

Call the Midwife season 6 episode 8 will be the last for the series on the BBC until Christmas, and that may be a difficult thing for many people to bear. To think, it’d be even more difficult in the event that it meant no further opportunity to see a Patsy return to the show.

While we cannot 100% confirm a return for an Emerald Fennell return — we also wouldn’t want to, since that would give something major away and spoil some of the fun of the series — one of the first images for the finale (see below) seems to strongly suggest that we will be seeing her come back. Can you imagine the show not bringing her back and shattering Delia’s heart? They’ve certainly done some devastating things with the show before, but even with this in mind, this would somehow still be devastatingly cruel and not something that they need to do under any circumstance.

The larger question for us comes when Patsy does return — will she stay? Are we going to see a permanent changing of the guard? The show’s brought in Valerie Dyer as one of the new midwives at Nonnatus House, and there is a pattern of some turnover there given that Trixie is one of the few primary midwives who’s been around with the series from the very beginning. We still remember how difficult it was to lose Jenny back in the third season, so losing Patsy and the only same-sex relationship on the show with her and Delia would be fairly devastating to say the least.

The season 6 finale is going to also bring you some other important watershed moments, with one of the biggest ones being the opportunity to see precisely what happens when Shelagh gives birth. We’re crossing our fingers for a few happy moments, and obviously not ones that are extraordinarily stressful. At this point, it feels as though the show’s been through and experienced more than enough of that already.
