Billions season 3 renewal official at Showtime
Today, the network confirmed the news that Billions, starring Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis, will be brought back for another batch of episodes. This news comes after only a handful of episodes into the second season, where it is generating a decent amount of buzz and attention. When looking at the granular live+same day ratings, the show is averaging just over 700,000 viewers, which is a decline of around 35% from where it was during season 1. However, there are some things to remember here in that the show has a different lead-in this time, fewer and fewer people are watching live, and there is of course a lot of competition on Sundays in between sporting events, awards shows, and of course other scripted programming. This is a show that is incredibly time-shifted, and people are watching whenever they get around to it.
In a statement confirming the Billions season 3 renewal, network programming head David Nevins passed along the following statement:
“Billions continues to be a show on the rise, growing not only in audience, but in critical buzz and cultural relevance … It offers a unique mix of pure entertainment with sly commentary on our current have/have-not economy. Season 2 is off to a tremendous start, and has only whetted our audience’s appetite for what will come in Season 3.”
When will Billions season 3 premiere?
It’s probably a little early to ponder over that question too extensively, but all early indicators to us suggest that you should be at some point around January or February of 2018. The one thing to remember here is that Showtime as a network has demonstrated a pattern for not airing many of their shows at the same time of the year every time. For example, take a look at show like Homeland that is premiering its latest season in January, whereas the seasons that aired before it came around in the fall. We’ll probably get a better sense of this near the end of the year.
