The Outlander season 3 – South Africa journey begins for Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan

Outlander - South Africa -

We know that you’ve been likely wondering when the Outlander – South Africa journey would be beginning for Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, and we’re pleased to report that the day is today!

In a post on Twitter (see below), Sam confirmed that his voyage to South Africa to continue to film this season, ironically based on the book Voyager by Diana Gabaldon, is underway. We imagine that this won’t be a quick flight (they are not traveling by horse as the photo would suggest), but upon arrival both he and Caitriona will be stationed there for several months until June.

One thing we’ll certainly say about their new location: Weather-wise, it couldn’t be more different from where they filmed in Scotland! Today in Glasgow, it’s about nine degrees Celsius and rainy; meanwhile, in Cape Town it’s 24 degrees Celsius and sunny. (For those of you who follow Fahrenheit, you’re going from the forties to the seventies, and it’s going to be much warmer in Cape Town later in the week.)

Sam and Caitriona are coming down from Seattle, as they just finished their time at Emerald City Comic-Con this weekend. For another example of all of the fun that they had while there, Balfe posted a pretty funny little video clip on Twitter of her pulling double-duty. Not only did she take photos with many fans, but she also did her part with some photography! (This may have been for just one photo — don’t spoil the illusion! It’s just worthy of a laugh or two.)

As for what’s awaiting the two when they arrive in South Africa, executive producer Matthew B. Roberts gives you a good sense of that on Instagram — ships! The whole reason that the cast is there is to film the sequences at sea and for Jamie and Claire in Jamaica. They’re using the architecture that is already in place there thanks to Black Sails, as the crew members at this studio are knowledgeable and well-equipped in taking on these scenes. There may be few people out there with more experience after several years of pirate drama.

The third season will premiere in September on Starz.

Rest assured — we’ll have even more Outlander – South Africa coverage coming up soon, so be sure to bookmark our archive page and check back! (Photo: Starz.)

Make sail! #outlander
