‘Star’ renewed for season 2 by Fox

Star -

It looks as though this “Star” is going to keep shining for a little while longer.

Today, Fox officially confirmed that they are ordering a third season of the Lee Daniels-produced musical drama, which is going to run for 13 episodes. For those who has followed the network and understand where it is coming from at the moment, this news is probably not going to come as a whole lot of a surprise. This is a show that still ranks as their #3 drama despite some declines since the premiere — only “Empire” and “Lethal Weapon,” which just premiered recently, are doing better. This is a network that does not exactly have a wide range of shows performing decently in the numbers, and they are still struggling to fill the void in the winter left by the end of “American Idol.”

Even if “Star” was performing worse than it is, there was still a reasonably good opportunity for it to return for one reason: Scheduling. Fox only seems interested in keeping “Empire” at around 16 episodes, so there is room for something else to fill in the cracks. This is a good show to do that, and it also is one that is conveniently set within the same universe. Therefore, there are theoretically some opportunities for crossovers that could be cultivated in the event that the show ever does want to go in that direction.

The second season of “Star” will most likely premiere either at the end of the year (if Fox chooses to launch the show the same way in which they did the first season) or early 2018.

With this renewal in mind, there are only a few other shows with a 2016 that still have their fate up in the air on the network, at least in terms of the hour-long ones — we’re speaking here mostly about “Gotham,” “Scream Queens,” “Pitch,” “Rosewood,” and “The Exorcist.” Of the group, “Gotham” seems like the best lock, with “Pitch” maybe coming after that just because of critical acclaim alone.
