‘Criminal Minds’ season 12, episode 14 preview: The further quest to save Spencer Reid

Criminal Minds

Wednesday night’s new episode of “Criminal Minds” is right around the corner, and it feels clear to say that the stakes have never been higher. The fate of one Spencer Reid is still hanging in the balance — he’s not on the verge of death, but he remains at risk of going away for a rather-long time, and in a foreign country, no less.

Ultimately, this is what the sneak peek below is all about — trying to find a way to help him. Unfortunately, Rossi discovers more and more how difficult this is going to be. The BAU doesn’t really have jurisdiction on the case, and it’s made so much worse by the fact that he was not in Mexico for business reasons. Reid also has his mother to care for, and with her Alzheimer’s, it’s incredibly difficult for her to remember from moment to moment what happened to him or why he is away.

There is a possibility that bail could be set for Reid sooner, and in one particularly awesome moment, Rossi seems ready and willing to spend whatever necessary in order to help ensure that his friend is released from this present dilemma and given a chance. All of this is well and good, but there’s still no guarantee of an acquittal.

As to what else is coming in this episode … let’s just say that crime won’t be taking a day off for Spencer and the rest of the team to navigate his legal woes. Penelope, JJ, and Rossi could be forced to deal with another case that distracts them from what they’re trying to do with their co-worker and friend. This Spencer story is probably not going to be resolved anytime soon; we heard chatter about a serialized story that would run through the majority of the rest of the season, and this appears to be it.
