‘Criminal Minds’ season 12, episode 14 preview: The trial of Spencer Reid

Criminal Minds

It was already pretty well-known that the back half of “Criminal Minds” this season was going to feel different than most of the ones that came before it, and there is a pretty good reason for it that is becoming all the more clear: His legal situation. This storyline is proving further that being a part of the BAU does not mean that you’re going to have an easier time getting off of charges when they’re thrown your way.

As a matter of fact, the BAU has already been told that because Reid’s accusations came at him not when he was out of the country for business, it’s harder to directly help him.

The promo below for Wednesday night’s new episode “Collision Course” suggests that the character DOES have an attorney, and that’s the small bit of good news that he’s got. Unfortunately, that may be the only good news that he’s got, given that the rest of the preview focuses on what appears to be bad news after bad news.

Of course, we think that Reid is innocent, as that’s the logical thing to think after watching him for much of the series. Given all of the time that he’s spent since the start of the series taking on various UnSubs, murders, and purveyors of many unspeakable crimes, the idea of him somehow being one of these people is rather hard to believe.

The challenge he faces is that whoever set him up to appear guilty did an awfully good job at it — there’s not a whole lot of evidence pointing towards anyone other than him, and while his trial is underway, the BAU will have some other things to focus on. There’s still going to be a case at the center of the episode, and the show is not abandoning its procedural component by any stretch of the imagination.
