‘The Vampire Diaries’ series finale: Nina Dobrev returning as Katherine

What's next -

For anyone out there who loved Katherine (or at least loved to hate her) on “The Vampire Diaries” this season, we come bearing great news: Her run on the show is not over.

It’s already been made clear via some photos that Nina Dobrev will be bringing back one iconic character to the finale in Elena Gilbert; in a post on Twitter, showrunner Julie Plec made it clear that you’re going to have another shot to see Dobrev play her second-most-iconic character in the history of the show. (Thanks to the doppelgangers, there are several different iterations of the character — though not on an “Orphan Black” level or anything like that.

Aside from Nina, it’s also been confirmed that several other former stars of the show will be coming back for the finale — the list includes Stephen R. McQueen (Jeremy), David Anders (Uncle John), and Sara Canning (Aunt Jenna). There may be even further surprises beyond that, but there could be a desire — understandably — for the show to keep a few things under wraps for the time being. After all, it makes a little bit of sense for them to want to surprise a few people out there with whatever they decide to do.

There are still two more episodes to go for “The Vampire Diaries” before the finale arrives, including one where Stefan and Damon are going to do what they can in order to team up and save Elena’s body from being burned badly at the hands of Cade. Meanwhile, another will feature a June wedding — or at least the illusion of a June wedding. With the materials that are out there, it’s hard to know for sure which. The series finale will air on March 10, and that closes the book on everything that you’ve seen.
