‘MacGyver’ episode 17 preview: Bozer hits the road in ‘Ruler’
For those of you who have wanted to see a side of “MacGyver” that featured more Bozer, you got your wish many weeks ago! The show’s thrown the character out slowly and surely into the field more and more, and moving into next week’s new episode, we’re taking it up YET ANOTHER NOTCH — we’re going to see him out of the country! This is the story behind “Ruler,” the episode airing in one week’s time … and one that absolutely sounds on paper like it’s going to be a pretty tremendous hoot.
If we were to do an impression of Stefon from “Saturday Night Live,” we’d say that this episode has everything: Disguises, explosions, an entire organization disavowing its members … some guy named “Bozer.” You get the gist. The synopsis below has a little bit more in the way of insight.
Synopsis – “Bozer’s first overseas mission goes terribly wrong when Mac and the team are blamed for a terrorist bombing and the Phoenix Foundation is forced to disavow them. Using a ruler and coconut oil to make disguises, the team must avoid authorities and clear their names without any support from back home.”
(Just try to read “using a ruler and coconut oil to make disguises” in Stefon’s voice — it totally works!)
In terms of long-term ramifications, there is nothing about the synopsis that makes us believe that this episode is going to have any; yet, at the same time it’s still interesting from the sole prospect of giving Justin Hires more to do as we start to see the further evolution of Bozer as a character. We’re understanding more and more of how he sees the world, and it seems like the only other natural steps for him are to throw him more in action and see if anything ever comes out of his relationship with Riley.
Another random thought: Wouldn’t it be somewhat funny if the season ends with Bozer becoming effectively into action hero status a la James Carter from “Rush Hour”? Hires goes full-circle!
