‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ premieres tonight; think he’s got anything to discuss?

Last Week Tonight -There are a variety of great things to watch on television tonight, but for us, there is still one thing that deserves even more buzz than it is getting at present: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.” It’s a brilliant show that really dives deep into a wide array of subjects. Not only that, but it’s one that has PLENTY to discuss at the moment given the course of events that have transpired since the last time it was one the air.

Specifically, we are talking about the Presidency of one Donald J. Trump. On his last show in 2016, Oliver offered up a brilliant (but in some ways depressing) look at the year, and that was before a depressing December that included more Trump controversies and the deaths of George Michael, Carrie Fisher, and Debbie Reynolds over the course of several days. Since that time, we’ve seen Inauguration, confirmation heroes, protests, and so much more.

The irony with “Last Week Tonight” in particular, though, is that there is no guarantee at all that we are going to even be discussing Trump at all. The whole point of this show is discussing whatever is on Oliver’s mind, and whatever he deems to be interesting. He was reluctant for most of last season (at least until the very end) to go all-in on his discussions of the election, largely because he knew that there were so many other issues out there worthy of discussion.

Consider things this way: There are probably about three million shows at the moment that are discussing Trump and controversies of his administration. Therefore, it wouldn’t be a whole lot of a surprise if he chose instead to pivot from that at some point early, and find a few nuggets of things that are not being discussed at the moment with anywhere near the same degree of emphasis. That may not happen tonight, but it could be soon.
