‘The Big Bang Theory’: Jim Parsons would be ‘shocked’ if season 11 doesn’t happen

The Big Bang TheoryWe’re in the midst of the tenth season of “The Big Bang Theory,” and over the course of production, one big question has lingered about the show’s future: Will there actually be a future?

First, some context. This show remains the #1 comedy on TV by a country mile, and from that vantage point alone, there isn’t all that much to worry about in terms of a desire to have it back. It’s also huge around the world, and there are repeats in syndication that continue to draw big ratings. It’s hard to compare it to other comedies from the pre-Netflix era, but this is still one of the most successful sitcoms in TV history.

On the flip side, money could remain a key sticking point. The cast’s contracts are all expiring, and mass negotiations are underway. Jim Parsons, in the video below, makes it clear on the weekend edition of “Today” that everyone wants to come back. Nothing is official, but there does not appear to be any dissension in the ranks or cast member interested in walking away from the show. Given both the salaries for the cast and the relatively-welcome schedule (at least by TV series standards), this is all welcome and understandable.

If we had a take on all this, it would be for CBS to renew the show for two more seasons, get the cast on board with lucrative deals that make them feel rewarded for their work (yes, it’s expensive, but if everyone’s making big money so should the cast), and then have the show wind down at the end of season 12. The live+same day ratings have slipped in recent years, and you don’t want to see them go so far down that it starts to feel like the show’s going out a shell of its former self. End while you’re still big and relevant, and give your writers plenty of time in which to know that the show is going to be wrapping things up.
