‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 12 preview: Could Catherine Avery make things better at the hospital?

Grey's 0

There are many things that are indicative of the current state of things at the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital on “Grey’s Anatomy,” but one of the biggest ones is the presence of Dr. Eliza Minnick at the hospital … and everything that this brings to go along with it. Her presence and insistence on evolving the hospital’s teaching programs has Richard Webber incensed and fearing for his own job security; meanwhile, Bailey’s come under fire for bringing her in to begin with.

So could Catherine Avery be someone to turn the tide and make everything better? It’s easy to understand why some people out there would want to feel this way, given that she has so many connections to both Bailey and is of course married to Richard.

Unfortunately, she’s choosing to be Switzerland in this situation, telling April in a conversation from tonight’s new episode, that they are better going about their own business. She has her own job, after all, and does not appear to be altogether interested in telling Richard or Bailey how to do theirs. We will continue to contend that there is probably some value in Minnick being there, just in terms of the fact that sometimes learning new things is important. Her biggest issue is that the authoritarian way in which she’s barged into the hospital is one that is going to lead to some dissension in the ranks. Nobody likes being told what to do, and her style is going to naturally irk some of the people who feel that they already have a great way of doing things that saves the most lives possible.

It’s ironic in a way since we’re talking about a situation involving only doctors directly, but nonetheless the biggest weakness of Minnick is that she seems to lack any significant bedside manner. She doesn’t make doctors feel good about the work they are already doing.
