TV Quick Hits: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ teaser; James Corden’s powerful statement; Oprah Winfrey’s new gig

Star Trek -We’re going to begin today’s edition of TV Quick Hits with a bit of news that will probably please many longtime Oprah Winfrey fans out there looking to see more of the media mogul on-camera moving forward: You will have a chance to watch her on “60 Minutes.”

In a statement, Winfrey had the following to say about joining the long-running news series as a special correspondent, where she could contribute various pieces to the show on an occasional basis:

“At a time when people are so divided, my intention is to bring relevant insight and perspective, to look at what separates us, and help facilitate real conversations between people from different backgrounds.”

The timing of Winfrey’s announcement is probably not a coincidence, given that many people right now are looking for some sort of unifying voice in the midst of tremendous political turmoil and chaos. Hopefully, she will get a chance to provide that.

James Corden’s powerful “Late Late Show” opening – While Corden is not someone who frequently expresses political opinions on his show, he did so in a subtle, powerful way at the start of Monday’s series, showing a recent trip from him to the airport and how easy the process was for him. This was meant to show some contrast between what some people are going through now as a result of President Trump’s latest executive order. Corden’s video included a brief sighting of some protesters, and then also a powerful message at the very end of it.

Star Trek: Discovery” is underway – While it may not be clear still when this show is going to be premiering on CBS All Access, the video below confirms that production is officially a go for the series in Canada. The show is going to be filming for much of the next several months, and features an excellent cast including Sonequa Martin-Green, James Frain, Michelle Yeoh, and others. We just hope that it lives up the hype and the multiple delays. If you had not heard, the show’s recent May premiere date may now be in a little bit more jeopardy. (Photo: CBS.)
