‘Game of Thrones’ season 7: Conor McGregor says he’s not playing part

LogoAs great as it would have been to see famed fighter Conor McGregor taking on a role on the upcoming seventh season of “Game of Thrones,” we do come bearing some rather sad news: It’s not going to be happening.

Speaking in a new interview on the Good Times Network variety channel (per Entertainment Weekly), McGregor made it clear that there were no clear talks about doing the show, other than a brief conversation he had with many people within the UFC:

“That [report] was everywhere and I’ve never even heard about it! I heard about it once after [a fight] … backstage in the dressing room. [UFC brass, including Dana White, were] in front of me and they were saying ‘these [vistors] want you to be in Game of Thrones.’ I’m banged up, my shin’s in a heap, I’ve been kicking his knee’s straight for 25 minutes, my leg’s in bits, and he’s trying to offer me a Game of Thrones role. And I’m saying, ‘Listen, come at me with sh– I want to hear, I’m not trying to be in show business, I’m trying to be in the fight business. Come at me with a real number to fight again. So that was the only time I ever heard the [words] Games of Thrones. And it went everywhere like months later! So I don’t know where that came from. But I’ve never been in contact with nobody from Game of Thrones and now I’m starring in Game of f—ing Thrones!”

Admittedly, the rumor felt somewhat strange at the time it first surfaced, with the only sensible part of it being that the show has featured various musicians in the past in tiny cameo roles. It was foreseeable that McGregor, if he was a major fan of the series, could have turned up somewhere in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it capacity. It was hard to see him in a major role, at least unless the show found a way to cover up the majority of his tattoos.

Also at this point we figure that “Game of Thrones” is probably spending most of its time focusing on its story (after all, they have as little as thirteen episodes left for the whole series) to worry too much about celebrity cameos.

The latest batch of episodes premieres this summer. For some premiere date speculation, be sure to head over here! You can also share some of your thoughts on the subject of McGregor’s casting in the comments. (Photo: HBO.)
