‘Supernatural’ season 12 spoilers: Richard Speight Jr. returns to direct
We always appreciate it when we get to see a member of the #SPNFamily return to the front of camera on “Supernatural,” but we’re just as happy to see them take on a prominent behind-the-scenes role. It gives us a good sense of evolution, and it’s a treat for longtime fans.
This is all why we’re rather thrilled to learn that Richard Speight Jr. (who plays Gabriel / The Trickster) will be returning to the CW series as a director for the episode airing on Thursday, February 16 entitled “Stuck in the Middle (With You).” First of all, that’s a great song. Second of all, this is the second episode in the past few years we’ve seen Speight helm — he also was responsible for “Just My Imagination” back in 2015, which is probably one of our favorite standalone episodes in the sense of exploring childhood, nostalgia, and the impact that an imaginary friend can have on your life.
So what’s coming up in Speight’s episode this time around? This one appears to be much more connected to the larger mythology of the season surrounding Mary Winchester and the British Men of Letters. Specifically, you’re going to see the Mary character look to ask her sons and Castiel for a little bit of help on a case. However, the twist here is that the British Men of Letters are also involved in it, and she’s not entirely upfront about that right away. That’s going to come out (doesn’t it always?), and when it happens, it could cause problems for everyone.
The fun that is with this episode is that we could get an opportunity to see some tension form between the Winchesters — maybe that’s not all that great of news for Mary and the boys, but we appreciate the chance to get this sort of meaty material. Also, we’re excited to see what Speight will bring to a story so essential to the larger arc of the season.
