While ‘Vikings’ season 4 prepares to end, here’s where season 5 is in production

Vikings Lagertha

The fourth season of “Vikings” will be coming to an end on History this Wednesday, and the bad news that comes with this is that there’ll be no more new episodes for a while. The good news is that the show was renewed for a fifth season a rather long time ago and there is another 20 episode order. They are also very far ahead of where the show is now in terms of production!

For confirmation of this very thing, you don’t have to look much further than the Twitter account of “Vikings” star Katheryn Winnick, who made it clear that she is currently working on the upcoming 16th episode of season 5. That means that while season 4 is about to be over, the cast isn’t that far from being done with the next iteration. It’s certainly possible that season 5 will not end until 2018, so you could be waiting a long time in order to see the next chapter of the story air. The one thing that makes us very happy is to see that Winnick’s Lagertha is going to be with us for a while in season five, because after the Seer told her that one of Ragnar’s sons will eventually be her undoing we’ve been worried that her end is coming soon.

One thing that we do think gets lost in the shuffle here is precisely how prolific show creator Michael Hirst is with his writing. When you look at most major series, even those airing on cable, they have a writers room with a handful of people working on scripts at the same time. Hirst is credited as the writer of just about every episode of the show, including the 20(!) installments that make up season 4. That is amazing. There are certainly showrunners who do take ownership of every episode, but typically when looking at those people we are talking more about shows with shorter seasons.

No doubt, Winnick’s Lagertha will have a role to play in the season finale, as tension mounts for her back in Kattegat after she learned that king Harald is coming for her throne. Season 4 was a great year of transition, in between the massive time jump and the death of Ragnar. Season 5, meanwhile, could easily be the year that is all about matters coming to a boil.
