‘Dancing with the Stars’ co-host Erin Andrews reveals secret cancer diagnosis, treatment

Erin -

While Erin Andrews did her part to make everyone feel comfortable and as though nothing was wrong both in her sportscasting job and co-hosting this past season of “Dancing with the Stars,” it turns out that there was so much more going on in her life than she let alone know.

In a new piece with Sports Illustrated, Andrews revealed that this past fall, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer, which required her to undergo treatment and recovery over the course of October. She underwent surgery in Los Angeles in October, and she missed two tapings of the ballroom competition. At the time, the public reason given was that she could care for her then-boyfriend (now fiance) Jarret Stoll, who lost his nephew in a car accident.

Speaking to People Magazine, a source from the show made it clear that nobody had any idea what Andrews (who is also a former contestant on the series) was going through:

“She’s always the first one to make a joke … She doesn’t show that things bother her, so you would never guess that she was going through something so awful as cancer. She never discussed it,”

While we don’t know Andrews, everything about this certainly suggests that she is the sort of person who prefers some element of normalcy in her life — therefore, it’s likely possible that she did not want to be treated differently in any way while she was working on the show, and she also wanted the focus to be on the dancers. This is a similar philosophy that she has in sports, wanting the focus there to be more about the athletes.

The new season of “Dancing with the Stars” is going to premiere on ABC in March; Andrews is set to return. We’re glad that she is doing better, and hopefully the remainder of the year will be full of nothing other than victories for her.
