‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ season 8 debate: How long should Hetty go rogue?

NCISLet’s get the bad news when it comes to “NCIS: Los Angeles” out of the way: There is no new episode of the series airing tonight on CBS. There are going to be many hiatuses ahead for the network for a wide array of reasons, with many of them being football-related. We’re going to be seeing the show come back with a new installment next week, but then after that, we’re going to be back on hiatus again until we get into the middle of February. We’ve got the Super Bowl and other awards shows to think about, which is one of the tricky things that comes with programming on Sunday nights.

Ultimately, thought, we don’t exactly think that CBS is sweating too much having all of these hiatuses — the show’s ratings to date are significantly better than in season 7, when it aired on Monday nights at 10:00 p.m. Eastern.

The question that we want to ask in this article is the one mentioned in the title: How long will the current story last? Can Hetty stay out doing her own thing forever? She, like Kensi, now understands the stakes of everything that is going on around the team. Several characters are behind bars, and if this Mole ends up having their way, there may not be a team at all by the end of this.

Personally, we’re loving this story, and we wouldn’t mind if it took another three or four episodes to get everyone back together again — provided that the story remains every bit as intense as it is now. We like it when procedurals get a tad more serialized, given that it does differentiate the episodes from the pack, and gives the cast some exciting new material to work on in the process. We’re not saying that the material is traditionally boring by any means, but a little bit of variance is good … especially for the Hetty character. There’s something about her being a badass that just head and shoulders above many other characters. A big part of it may just come from the fact that she doesn’t look like many of the characters who we’ve come to associate with being in this role.

As for the identity of the Mole, we don’t mind who it is so much as it isn’t the most-predictable route (for us, that is Anna). The main thing that we hope is that there is some more story told after the big reveal, and this isn’t just a situation where they are found out and properly arrested a minute or two later.

Meanwhile, we do still want to celebrate the life of Miguel Ferrer (who played Owen Granger on the series) earlier this month. We recently posted an article featuring many tributes from the cast, and we recommend checking that out. (Photo: CBS.)
