‘Saturday Night Live’ music: Big Sean performs ‘Bounce Back,’ ‘Sunday Morning Jetpack’

SNL -We’ll start this “Saturday Night Live” music piece with news that isn’t necessarily going to shock anyone out there: We’re not someone who is incredibly familiar with the musical stylings of one Big Sean. We’ve heard him featured in a couple of songs over the course of the past few years, but for the sake of the first song (at least) on tonight’s episode, he stood front and center for a performance of “Bounce Back.”

It took us about five seconds to figure out what this song was going to be about: He had a bad night (or, he “took an L” as he calls it) but he was ready to bounce back and move forward. It’s really not our style of music, so it’s hard to really comment on the performance of this too extensively. (We would say that we preferred what Chance the Rapper did earlier this season than anything here.)

On a more positive note, one of the things that was probably the most impressive was the staging of the performance, courtesy of the fog and the lightning that almost turned the entire stage into a complete different environment. Granted, if we were prone to seizures we’re not sure that any of those flashing lights would have done us any good.

Second Song – We couldn’t find the lyrics to the song online, but it seems to be called “Sunday Morning Jetpack” — and we do personally feel as though this one was the far stronger of the two. It had lyrics that felt a little more heartfelt, and based on the current moment in the world rather than something a little bit more generic. One of the things that we are the most interested in when it comes to this era of negativity is whether or not we’re going to see that lead to some turns in music where artists start performing numbers that are a little more hopeful in tone and talk more about the future and things that could be coming their way.
