‘Will & Grace’ revival official at NBC; Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, more to return

Will and Grace -

Was Leslie Jordan right all along? The actor and former “Will & Grace” guest star announced recently that the show would be coming back to NBC, and on Wednesday that the TCA Winter Press Tour, the news was made official.

As Jordan specified, this revival is going to run for ten episodes, and original showrunners Max Mutchnick and David Kohan are back on board to executive-produce. Meanwhile, legendary director James Burrows is also going to be returning to be an EP and direct the upcoming episodes.

In a statement, network programming head Robert Greenblatt had the following to say about the show coming back:

“We’re thrilled that one of the smartest, funniest, and most defining comedies in NBC history is coming back … This groundbreaking series for everything from gay rights to social and political commentary — all disguised as a high-speed train of witty pop culture — is coming back where it belongs.”

It’s a little early to know precisely if this revival is going to turn into anything more, but we know that personally we’d love to have the show back for a new batch of episodes every couple of years. Give America what they want in terms of nostalgia, but only do the show every so often so that it feels special. We think that this has been one of the problems with some other recent nostalgia-themed programming including “Fuller House” and “Girl Meets World,” who each got into full seasons and annual airings almost right away. To be fair, it seems to be working okay with the former show — however, with the latter “Girl Meets World” is canceled and currently looking for a new home.

All of the show’s original main cast is slated to return — given everything that Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and the rest of the gang has done since it went off the air, this feels even more like an all-star cast than ever before. To think, the origins of the show coming back seemed to stem mostly from a campaign video that was created last year. Who would’ve anticipated that we’d get a full revival out of it?
