‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ promo brings you ‘Game of Thrones’ – Larry David goodness

Last Week Tonight -

The last time that a new episode of “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” aired on HBO, it was not that long after the Presidential Election. Therefore, the host has missed an opportunity to commentate on a lot of big things that have been going on in the world. We’ve seen many a Congressional hearing, a Twitter war, the preparation for Inauguration, and then also the Inauguration itself.

So ultimately, Oliver’s got a ton to talk about when his show does return to HBO in February, but in the first promo below he made a choice to self-deprecate more so than reference any key issues. Specifically, he kept believing that the hyperbolic HBO narrator guy was talking about him when he was introducing other shows, including “Game of Thrones,” “Silicon Valley,” and even “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

There were several things about all of this that turned out to be really funny. For one, we got a lot of laughs out of seeing Oliver have a discussion with Kumail Nanjiani’s character of Dinesh on the series, just as we also had some fun listening to Larry David try to explain what he’s been doing in the past five years since “Curb” was on the air. (It’s classic Larry, and Larry may be the one person who is more self-deprecating than Oliver is in terms of HBO talent.)

The thing about Oliver and his show is that even though the temptation could be there for him to stick to ridiculing Donald Trump and his administration, we know at the same time that this is a guy who is interested in covering a wider array of issues than this. If you recall, he tried to avoid Trump for as long as possible leading up to the election, but when he finally did put his focus on him, he delivered with one of the most epic, blistering takedowns of any political figure we’ve had a chance to see ever since Trump’s candidacy was first announced.

Some of Oliver’s pieces have had an impact on public life — while we cannot say if any of President Obama’s actions with commuting sentences for non-violent drug offenders was related to Oliver’s comments against mandatory minimums, but he shined a major light on issues in the prison system that Obama is working to fix in his final years in office.
