‘This Is Us’ spoilers: Could we flash back further before finale?

On Tuesday night, NBC gave us an episode of “This Is Us” that was really like no other before it given everything that it contained. Rather than spending much time in the present, this was a story almost exclusively about the past, and a very different side of the day of the birth than what we’d seen to date. We got so much more insight in the people who were responsible for helping Jack and Rebecca welcome their children — it was an intimate, heartfelt look into a specific time, and there of course will be more of this sort of thing to come.

What may surprise some of you out there is that we could go even back further into the past moving forward this season; specifically, we could see our central couple before they even knew each other. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Mandy Moore had the following to say about what could be coming in some of the episodes ahead:

“I think there’s one coming before the end of the year, and it’s one that I’m really interested in. I want to know who Jack and Rebecca were before they met. I’m curious about who they are and what they were doing with their lives before they met and how ultimately meeting one another changed the course of their lives.”

To us, this sounds great as a partial component to an episode — while we enjoyed almost everything that the show did give us in the past timeline tonight, at the same time they have a rather difficult line they need to figure out how to tow. You want to flesh out so many of these stories, but at the same time you also want to move the story forward in the present. Just remember here that you do have 18 episodes in a season, a smaller number than the average network show.
